You have just purchased a motorcycle and now it is time to put insurance on it. You may be surprised to find that it is a little harder to insure a motorcycle than to insure a vehicle. However, when looking for local motorcycle insurance begin with independent agents who usually has several different companies they can write through compared to other companies that operate under one carrier. Some people may not realize that local motorcycle insurance is usually fairly expensive. The type of motorcycle will, of course, make a big difference. Motorcycles considered "crotch rockets" are rated as high performance thus causing local insurance companies to charge a higher premium. When deciding which local motorcycle insurance to go with you will also need to decide what type of coverage you wish to carry on your motorcycle. If you owe on the bike or it has a high book value then you must or will want to carry full coverage. If it is an older bike then you may want to opt for just liability coverage to keep the premium slightly lower. The age of the person who will be driving the motorcycle also makes a big difference. Be prepared to pay two to three times more for someone under 25 years of age compared to those over 25 years of age. If you are talking about a motorcycle for a teenager, you may be looking at around $1000 a year on premium for full coverage insurance. You can probably depend of doubling that (or more) if the bike is a "crotch rocket".
