In an effort to safeguard the safety of the local residents of a community, typically all local municipalities have Local Professional Engineers employed in them to support the needs of the community. These needs range from the development of subdivisions for residential areas to the construction of skyscrapers for the support of commercial development for those living in those residential areas. Whether it is for surveying land to establish the boundaries of a specific property to the design of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (also known as HVAC) systems for multi-story buildings for use in commercial applications, all of these tasks need the support of a Local Professional Engineer. The reason that Local Professional Engineers are required for the design and development of commercial and residential properties is that it is the Local Professional Engineer that makes sure that the construction of these premises adheres to nationally recognized standards. It is the responsibility of the Local Professional Engineer to insure that established construction standards are adhered to so that the safety of the public is maintained when they enter either a public or private building. These standards were developed by the Local Professional Engineers in conjunction with national engineering institutions to maintain the integrity of engineering designs by Local Professional Engineers. The designs that are developed by the Local Professional Engineers are checked against these established standards by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction. In most municipalities this would be the plan check department of their building department. It should be noted that all plans developed by the Local Professional Engineers need to be reviewed and approved by the building department prior to their release for construction to assure adherence to nationally recognized standards.
