Maine is a beautiful state in the New England region of the United States that is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, New Hampshire, and Canada. Well-known for its scenery and its seafood, Maine is the both the northernmost and easternmost state in New England. Members of the United States government wanted Maine to become a state because of the rapid increase in the area's population, but it was up to voters in Massachusetts to vote on whether or not it would secede. Maine became the 23rd state on March 15, 1820 as a part of the Missouri Compromise. The original capital was Portland, though it was later changed to its current capital, Augusta, so that it would be closer to the center of the state.

Maine is home to many colleges and universities. The University of Maine has nine different universities located throughout the state, one of which is entirely dedicated to law. Nine different community colleges, such as the Central Maine Community College, make up the Maine Community College System. There are a number of other schools in the state that are neither a university or community college, such as the Maine College of Art. The population of Maine is about 1,318,301. The population density of the state is about 41.2 people per square mile, making it the least densely populated state of any that is located west of the Mississippi River. Around 20 percent of the population lives in the Greater Portland metropolitan area, making this the most densely populated part of Maine. Many French Americans reside in Maine, and a census has shown that more people speak French at home in Maine than in any other state. Maine's rather large French-Canadian community developed from those who migrated to Maine from Quebec, a province of Canada that borders the top of Maine.

Known as the Pine Tree State, Maine is covered in many dense forests. In fact, nearly 90 percent of the state's land is covered in forests, most of which is uninhibited. Some of this land does not have formal political organization into local units because so few people reside there. The Northwest Aroostook, one of these unorganized regions, is so sparsely populated that there is an average of one person for every 100 square miles. This may seem strange since Maine has a larger population, but that's because many people live more along the cost line.
