Laminate flooring is a popular option for homeowners due in large part to its durability and affordability. It simulates wood and even stone without costing the same amount as these raw materials. This kind of synthetic flooring has multiple layers and a protective finish. It is abundantly easy to clean and is far more durable than carpet. Another major appeal of laminate flooring is that it is generally easier to install than hardwood or granite, for instance. It is also lighter than both of these materials. In this day and age of D.I.Y. homeowners and mega retailers that sell everything under the sun to upgrade, remodel, or even build a house, laminate flooring has to be considered one of the easiest materials with which to work and install. Installing this type of flooring is much like piecing together a large puzzle, as most varieties come in what are known as “tongue and groove” pieces that make assembling the floor relatively easy. Before beginning to lay the floor, you will need to put down a sub-floor in the form of some kind of film or foam (you will find this at the same retailers where you purchase the flooring itself). This layer provides sound-proofing and helps the floor maintain the proper amount of moisture. You are also going to want to keep a small space (not exceeding 10 mm in most cases) between the ends of the floorboards and any walls in order to allow for expansion. You will also need the appropriate saw for cutting pieces to the right size.
