In any town, village or community throughout the world, there are numerous gathering places where locals meet to converse, socialize or conduct business. The town hall is of course the focal point of community activities in many towns across America. They were found in cities and villages throughout Europe as far back as the Middle Ages. In America, Local Taverns were in existence as early as the 17 the century. They were found in several colonies, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Virginia. The name tavern derives from the Greek word for workshop. Local Taverns are by tradition homes where guests partake of food and drink. In the past, they were distinguished from inns and public houses in that tavern guests were invited by the owner whereas these other establishments served more like todays hotels and restaurants, welcoming transient guests. Today, those distinctions are less apparent, with many smaller eating and drinking establishments of all types referring to themselves as taverns. The type of food and drink served at Local Taverns depends on where the tavern is located. Local Taverns in England (more often referred to as pubs) serve pub style food including English style ales as well as a menu including English dishes such as sausage and Shepherds pie. In Local Taverns in Greece, on the other hand, you might find a variety of Greek wines and liquors along with various fresh seafood dishes including calamari and other locally caught specialties.
