The national hockey league or NHL is an institution in the mid west and Canada but is often forgotten in other parts of the United States. Southern California is home to two NHL franchises. The first is the Los Angeles Kings and the second is the San Jose Sharks. California is not a place normally associated with ice hockey but these two teams are changing that view. Despite the amount of time these two teams have been around they receive very little recognition on a national level. The Los Angeles Kings have been around since 1966 but they only won the division championship once in the 1990-1991 in their history. Blue and Gold were the original colors for the Los Angeles Kings but in 1987 the colors changed to silver and black. This was the same year that Bruce McNall bought the kings. McNall as the new owner gave the Kings a complete overhaul. He also managed to trade the Edmonton Oilers for their star play, Wayne Gretzky. The hockey legend came to play in the city of angels for years and the Canadians mourned the loss of a national treasure, while all the fans of the Los Angeles Kings cheered to have a living legend as part of their team Then in 1995 the ownership of the Kings changed again. This time Phillip Anschutz and Edward Roski bought the team and began to make changes like all the other owners that have came before them The team is still going strong and they finished the 2009-2010 season with a winning record.
