Pediatrics is that branch of human medicine that gives children the upper hand. It concentrates solely and entirely on the medical well being of children and young adults or adolescents. The age of a person who will be referred to the Pediatrics section of a local hospital will range from as early as a newly born baby to a young adult between the ages of 18 and 21. Some young adults can be referred to this section depending on their body make up and the way their bodies react to different situations, diagnosis and treatments. It is right to say that the field of medicine known as Pediatrics is a relatively new one which did not have great relevance until around the mid 19th Century when people like Abraham Jacobi took this branch of medicine to a whole new level. However, prior to this, there are several references that had been made to this branch of medicine with people like Soraneus having written what would be known as the first manuscript that tackled Pediatrics and people like Bagallarder who published a book entitled 'Little Book on Disease in Children' sometime around 1472. Over time the practice has become main stream and today, most local hospitals, clinics and medical centers have pediatricians among their staff. The importance of Pediatrics can not be under estimated because as much as children have similar body functions and processes like mature adults, they have different body sizes which essentially mean that they have different physiological differences.
