The device connects via Bluetooth and set up is as easy as downloading the corresponding app onto your phone. Software updates are also synced wirelessly to make sure that your watch is always up to speed.

Features

Pebble is the perfect smart companion for people who are always on the go. If you're a runner or cyclist, you can use it to access your smartphone's GPS and display your distance, speed, and other pace data. The team is even working on making the smartwatch golfer-friendly. According to their Kickstarter page, they're teaming up with Freecadie to create a golf rangefinder app to let golfers view the current distance to the green from the watch.

Music lover? You can use the watch it while listening to music, as Pebble has a music control panel that allows you to play, skip, or pause the tracks on your phone.

Pebble also offers vibrating notifications to let you see what's up, without having to bring out your phone. Get alerts on incoming calls (with caller ID), new emails, calendar alerts, Facebook messages, twitter, weather alerts, phone alarms, and even read text messages (only available for Android). To dismiss a notification, simply shake your wrist.

Another cool feature of Pebble is that lets users be techy while staying fashionable at the same time. The smartwatch offers customizable watchfaces that allow you to change the look and feel of watch, depending on your mood, activity, or outfit.

In terms of hardware specifications, the smartwatch has a 144 x 168 px display, 4 buttons, a vibrating motor, and a 3 axis accelerometer with gesture detection. It works on the iPod Touch and iPhone 3GS and up, running iOS 5, as well as Android devices running OS 2.9 and up. Its battery life lasts for about 7 days, and you can charge it via USB. Pebble also has a beautiful e-paper display that still looks great and clear even under direct sunlight.

Open to app devs

Pebble can run multiple apps and have customized notifications. The Pebble team is launching an open SDK for developers who have any app ideas or can create new ways to make the smartwatch even more useful.

Kickstarter success

The concept of Pebble was unveiled on the crowd-sourced fundraising site Kickstarter, last month. People loved the idea so much that the project received $100,000 of funding in just two hours. The project's success didn't stop there though. After 28 hours, the project reached over one million dollars in pledges, making it the highest grossing project in Kickstarter.

At the time of writing this, the smartwatch already has $10,183,327 worth in funding, and the latest update on Pebble's Kickstarter page states that members of the team have flown to China to touch base with factories that can help bring Pebble into mass production.
