Lockitron Brings Keyless Entry to Homes

The future of locks and keys has finally arrived. Get a load of Lockitron, a keyless entry system that allows you to control your door's deadbolt through your phone (read: it doesn't necessarily have to be a smartphone.)

Lockitron lets you lock and unlock your door from anywhere in the world. Say goodbye to wondering if you locked your door before leaving; with this nifty system, you'll be able to secure your home even when you're miles away. Need to let guests in remotely? Lockitron also allows you to grant and revoke access right from your account. Perfect for people who have house-sitters or temporary occupants, this feature eliminates the need to give out keys to individuals.

According to the Lockitron website, the system "is compatible with most through-hole / cylindrical deadbolts." You can install it by attaching the Lockitron unit to your door's deadbolt, allowing it to control the lock. (For more detailed instructions and to see illustrations, visit the Lockitron compatibility page here.)

Lockitron for Mobile

If you have a smartphone, you can download the Lockitron app to your iPhone / Android device or visit the system's mobile website and access your account from there. The app allows you to lock and unlock your door with a single swipe as well as grant and revoke access to guests. Lockitron also sends you a notification whenever someone unlocks your door (even if they have a key) allowing you to closely monitor who walks in or out of your house.

No smartphone? No problem. For a monthly fee, you can enable text-message access to turn your phone into a virtual key.

If you lose your phone, you can disable access by modifying your Lockitron password. And don't worry, you'll still be able to get through the door using your regular key (in the event of you misplacing your phone or draining its battery).

Security Features

As immensely cool and futuristic as it is, remotely controlling access to your home is also very serious. That's why the Lockitron team implements solid security features to protect users' accounts and home. According to the Lockitron site, they rely "on the same security protocols used in online banking."

All Lockitron traffic is redirected to HTTPS. Public facing web applications are hardened against XSS, code injections, MITM attacks, replay attacks, and are patched as new attack vectors emerge. Servers are firewalled and monitored for system integrity. Sensitive data is encrypted when stored or transmitted. Access to services is strictly logged and monitored.?"Defense in Depth" is practiced where applicable. Services are routinely patched and updated. Deadbolts and door locks are triggered using the same one-way cipher found in popular car fobs. Key cylinders are bump-resistant.
