Twitter Mania

Although some of the excitement surrounding Twitter has died down, the trend is still popular among celebrities and millions of Americans. E! News often delivers stories based on tweets they found posted on celebrity Twitter pages. With sites like MySpace and Facebook, which allow members to post status updates, why would a site like Twitter be so popular? For all the hype, the site is just an account of a person's daily activities, yet six million Americans signed up for Twitter accounts in 2009 alone.

So why do people sign up for Twitter? There are many reasons why we love to fill others in on our day. For one, if we're having a bad day and post it up on our site, we hope that friends and loved ones will reach out to us. If we have good news, Twitter is an easy way to spread the word. We can draw attention to a problem or bring up an issue in a public way by simply tweeting. Let's say you want to "accidently" run into the person you have a crush on, by posting where you will be for the evening, you could get your crush to show up without even having to ask. Lastly, there is a little narcissism in all of us. The world revolves around us, our problems, our successes, and in some cases, what we ate for breakfast.

Twitter can also be used to spread gossip, hear gossip, to keep tabs on friends and foes, and even used as a medium for airing out dirty laundry. For example, celebrities often like to address statements made about them in tweets. They use Twitter to attack their opponent and debate a topic. Long time actor Kristie Alley used her Twitter page to address less than kind remarks made about her by comedian Conan O'Brien. He used his talk show to publicly humiliate her, so she ran to Twitter. Using her Twitter account was a great way to let her fans know about what he had done, and to address the issue.

As tweeting becomes a part of a person's daily life, it can be easy to forget that posts can be accessed by everyone in your network, and sometimes the broader public as well. Recently, Twitter cost some people their jobs and got one college athlete into hot water. A waiter at a well known restaurant tweeted about not getting a good tip from a well known celebrity, he was subsequently fired. Twitter may have its pros and cons, but it's popular none the less.

For celebrities, Twitter is a great way to get publicity and notify the press where they will be. The saying, "No publicity is bad publicity," seems to be a growing trend in Hollywood thanks to Twitter. No matter why you use Twitter, the fact is that many Americans are signing up for the service. They enjoy telling the world about their daily routine, their thoughts, and feelings.

What's my advice? Use Twitter to post jokes, enlighten friends, and have fun. Stay away from gossip, malicious comments, and negativity in general. And always remember that whatever you post is accessible by the public. Basically, choose your words wisely.
