Get an Overview of How your Facebook Friends are Doing with Wisdom

Facebook uses two methods that allow users to manage their news feeds. The first one is sorting updates by date in which the social network displays all of your friends' posts in descending chronological order. The second method is arranging the posts by popularity. When you click on the "Top News" option on the upper right side of your newsfeed, Facebook displays posts that it thinks you want to see. By using their "EdgeRank" formula, the social network factors in your affinity between individuals, the type of posts that are published, and the weight of each post, among others, to determine which of them should appear under "Top News" on your news feed, and in what order.

Now while these methods have proven to be effective to some extent, Facebook's swift and exponential growth has made it difficult for users to keep track of how their friends are doing. With so many people being part of the social network, and a ton of updates being posted every second, missing or skipping important updates can be unavoidable. Sure, you can always check each individual profile to see what's going on with your friends, but that can be time-consuming.

Enter the Wisdom application. Wisdom is an app that provides users with analytics of their news feed. Available online and on your iDevice of choice, the app basically takes you to a dashboard that allows you to sort your friends' updates by popularity, mood, sentiment, or even by topical interest such as travel, family, health, or career.

For instance, after sorting my news feed using "health," I immediately found out that two of my friends suffered from headaches last week. Similarly, sorting the posts by popularity allowed me to see which posts got the most comments and likes. Additionally, aside from posts and updates, Wisdom allows you to see the most popular Check-in locations of your friends.

Want to know what your friends are into? Wisdom also has an "Interest" tab that shows the number of people from your friends list that "liked" a certain page. For instance, using this tool, I saw that 65 of my friends apparently watch the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and a whopping 250 of them "like" Angry Birds (man those birds are unstoppable).

The "My Network" tool is interesting as well, because it provides you with graphs displaying the age, gender, and relationship status demographics of your network. I clicked this tab and found at that 44% of my friends are single, 39% are in a relationship, 11% are married, and 7% are engaged. In terms of gender, I saw that my network is pretty imbalanced, as only 38% of my friends are male.

All in all, Wisdom is a good app that can give you the "pulse" of your personal network. Of course, I doubt that it's going to change the world any time soon, but it's a pretty cool app, nevertheless, with its ability to provide you with a new way of looking at your friends list on Facebook.
