Top 5 Image Bookmarking Websites
The boom of Pinterest has put the spotlight on image-bookmarking sites and seems like the concept of marking images and compiling them online is the next big thing here in the Interwebs. These kinds of websites are pretty handy especially in this day and age where people and events are moving so fast that we may not have enough time to fully appreciate or remember the things that we see. Thanks to image bookmarking though, users can mark things that they find interesting with a click of a button, and come back to their collections whenever they have time.
Additionally, thanks to mobile devices, people can now access their images even when they're on the go. It's important to note that not all image bookmarking services are the same. Sure, they're all built around the same principles, but each of these sites have subtle differences and functions that can be useful to various types of people.
If you're looking for a site to host your image collections, try out different services first to see which one would be a good fit to your needs. Not sure where to start? Check out my top 5 picks below:
1. Pinterest - Of course this site will be at the top of the list. Pinterest is the leading image bookmarking site on the web with over 10 million registered users. It acts a virtual pin board where you'll be able to "pin" stuff that you like. From cute cat photos and memes to infographics and book covers, this site will let you keep all your favorite images in one place. You can pin stuff from anywhere on the web, thanks to the site's bookmarklet. If you're surfing within the community, you'll be able to "re-pin" the images that other people have pinned. Pinterest is also a social network that allows users to follow each other and keep track of the things that they pin.
2. Friendsheet - Okay, so this is more of a picture browser than an image-bookmarking website, but it's laid out in a format that's very similar to Pinterest and other sites. Friendhseet is essentially a place to see your photos and your friends' pictures all on one page. It uses Facebook connect to turn the images from your news feed into a Pinterest-like website. Mark Zuckerberg himself "liked" Friendsheet, and apparently the site went from 60,000 unique visitors a month to 150,000 the day Zuckerberg hit the like button for Friendhseet.
3. WeHeartIt - Labeled as "A home for your inspiration," this site lets users bookmark images by "hearting" them. Similar to other image bookmarking websites, you can also follow other users and see the stuff that they heart. Aside from allowing users to categorize the things they heart, WeHeartIt also makes use of tags to further organize the site's content.
4. Fancy - This "part store, blog, magazine and wishlist" is another great place to discover and bookmark great stuff online. Fancy does have additional features though. It lets members earn promotions by being active on the site. For instance, if you pin 50 items in the Women's category, you'll earn the Women's Fashion Director, while adding 25 things to the Gadgets category will earn you the title of Tech Enthusiast. On top of this, you can unlock deals by checking out the collections of select stores and retailers on the site.
5. Want - As discussed in yesterday's post, Want is an image-bookmarking website that focuses on things that people can actually buy. You hit the "Want" button on items that you well, WANT and people in your network will be able to see and "re-want" them as well. Want also partners up with online stores to help them give their products more exposure.
