You have heard of dermatologists, urologists, and maybe even nephrologists but other than specialty, what makes them different from one another? Each of these professions requires roughly ten years of medical school, plus another 3-5 years more afterward. You might wonder why people go that long, but each of these professionals make on average 200-500k a year to show for it. Local occupational physicians are what you may see on TV, be it a cardiologist, oncologist, surgeon, or a neurologist. Each has a specialty field they learn, with a specialized course they follow after medical school. However because of the limited amount that graduate on par to their retirement (not to mention the number that rarely achieve this feat) these specialists are often in high demand with little supply. They can command figures above because they offer services even medical doctors have trouble performing, or would even perform. Occupational physicians have a tendency to work for themselves, or contract services out to hospitals. Meaning, if you decided at one point to practice alone you could, while on the other hand being able to network and work in a facility with none of the long term investments of facilities, and supplemental medical staff. You may even teach, work for the government, or act as a specialized consultant. No matter what you would like to do there’s something to apply towards it.
