Facebook Turns Profiles into Timelines

On September 22, Facebook's developer conference, f8 was held in San Francisco, CA. As a much anticipated event, Mark Zuckerberg usually uses it to unveil big features and changes to the social network, and people get hyped about it every time. This year was no different. Prior to the event, the web was buzzing about what Zuckerberg had up his sleeve. There were a few people, of course, who knew what Facebook had in store, but they wouldn't reveal anything, except for the assurance that it was going to be big.

So when the anticipated f8 day arrived, members of the tech community eagerly sat on the edge of their seats and waited for Mark Zuckerberg to take the floor. Now the question that of course comes to mind is, are the new Facebook features really that phenomenal as they were built up to be? The short answer is yes.

Mark Zuckerberg introduced "Timeline" which is set to be the new Facebook profile for users. A completely revamped Facebook page, the new design serves as a virtual scrapbook for users that not only lets people see your life in full color (thanks to the large image and video sizes), but it also lets you browse through your updates (and your friends' updates) over the years. While the old Facebook profile does allow you to view not-so-recent posts, you will have to click on the "Older Posts" link at the bottom of the page again and again, until you reach the specific the date; this can be quite tasking, especially if you're looking for a post that that's a few years old. The new Facebook on the other hand, addresses this with a simple year menu located at the upper right-hand side of the page. If you wanted to jump to a specific post in say, 2005 you can do and you'll automatically to that part of the page, without having to scroll down endlessly.

But Faceboook Timeline doesn't just go back to your old posts on Facebook (which can only date back as early as 2004). Timeline can actually date back up to the day you were born. Users are free to add significant life events such as graduations, weddings, childbirth, etc. Just set a date to a certain experience, and Facebook will include it in your Timeline. The timeline is shown in a new gird view, allowing users to view more content with ease.

Wondering about what will happen to privacy? You're not alone. The good thing about Timeline is that users can still control who sees what on their profile. Sure, the new Facebook profile may be more "stalker-friendly" in a way, because it lets people find out things about you with less clicks, and less effort, but don't fret because you can still tweak your privacy setting to your heart's content to ensure that your timeline is as open or as private as you want. You also have the option to hide posts from your timeline, or to delete them completely.

All in all, I think that congratulations are in order. It's quite admirable how Facebook has once again, taken "social" to a whole new level. Just when you thought that Google+ is giving them a run for their money, the kids at Facebook go out and pull this.
